Average TSP account balances have grown steadily - and impressively - over the years.

Average holdings for both FERS and CSRS participants crossed the 6-figure mark in 2013. Since then, they’ve risen steadily to the mid-140s in 2017 and 2018.

By the end of 2018, the average FERS account balance was $139,560, and the average CSRS account balance was $147,154.

Average TSP account balances drifted into the $140,000s at the end of 2018.

Average Roth TSP account balances were in the low-five figure range for FERS participants, and they reached about $20,000 among the far fewer CSRS participants, at the end of 2018.

Average TSP account balances for Uniformed Service Members reached almost $25,000 by the end of 2018, while new ‘Blended Retirement System’ (BRS) participants reached close to $5,000 average account balances in just one year since the BRS became operational.
